On May 31, 2021, songwriter/composer Daniel Knox and multidisciplinary electronic artist/composer Nick_Jones will release their debut collaboration album Coinhammer for the project of the same name as a joint release on their respective labels H.P. Johnson Presents and Thinkbreak Records.

Coinhammer is a combination of lilting neo-classical arrangements and found sounds from the teeming pre-COVID world paired with industrial, ambient, and sometimes abrasive noise elements. From its combination of organic and electronic components, there is a shifting implied story that emerges as ominous yet stained with tinges of hope. Contemplative pianos wander through the echoes of a haunted house. Cannons sound in the distance beneath a bed of lush strings, birds, and frogs sing to a movie theater’s film projector. Coinhammer is at once surreal and hyper-real with clandestine recordings made by Daniel Knox and Nick_Jones from Chicago, London, Porto, and elsewhere. The listener travels in and out of memory touchpoints, dreams, and the world that emerges when no one is looking, to unite in an album that challenges one moment, and comforts the next. It is incidental music for the pathos and pedestrian incidents of life.

Knox and Jones have been sounding boards for each other’s music and artistic expressions for over two decades. Daniel’s first live show was part of a fundraiser for a theatre company where Nick was the founding artistic director. Nick also played tuba on Daniel’s album Evryman for Himself (2011). Daniel acted in the first play that Nick ever produced in 2001 as part of the Around the Coyote festival. Theatre and film have always been around both artists who have found their way to music. Daniel and Nick recently scored Lily Ekimian & A.T Ragheb’s upcoming short film The Sailor. Nick also scored Songs From The Odyssey (2021), the Mary Zimmerman Theatrical adaptation of The Odyssey produced at Loyola University Chicago directed by Sarah Gabel.
